A homeless man has been charged with first-degree murder after he stabbed a man to death in a McDonald's parking lot in Florida earlier this week.

The victim, 28-year-old Kevin Adorno of Farmington, Connecticut, happened to stop at a McDonald's in Vero Beach to charge his phone and purchase food while he was on a cross-country bike trip from Maryland to Miami, where he planned to propose to his girlfriend.

"He happened to stop here in Vero Beach, grabbed a bite to eat, and was charging his cell phone," Police Chief David Currey told police told ABC affiliate WPFB-TV. "He got on the phone with his girlfriend, [to whom] we understand he was going to propose."

According to a press release from the Vero Beach Police Department, the incident happened Monday night when 59-year-old Rene Herrera Cruz spotted Adora using his cell phone outside of the restaurant, reports Fox CT. He told police that he he felt threatened because he thought Adora was plotting to attack him.

"Cruz admitted to stabbing Adorno. He stated that he thought Adorno was directing other people via cell phone to attack him and Cruz therefore felt threatened and attacked Adorno," police said in a statement.

"It was evident from the amount of blood that he had been stabbed several times in the chest and arm," the police statement said. "Although EMS and Fire Rescue also assisted in the attempts to save Adorno; he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased a short time later at the IRMH."

Cruz was arrested that same night near the crime scene. Police also recovered the 2-inch blade that he used in the attack in a nearby bush.

Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey told NBC that Cruz called police the night to report that people were out to get him.

"He called us from Burger King right across the street and he told responding officers that individuals were looking for him or were after him," Currey said.
