Swarm of Teenagers Attack Shoppers, Employees at Memphis Kroger
A mob of teenagers rushed a Tennessee grocery store parking lot Saturday night, attacking people at random, including patrons and two workers. The whole encounter was caught on tape and shared on social media.
An estimated 100 to 125 kids were involved in these bizarre attacks outside the Memphis Kroger grocery store. A witness on the scene told WREG-TV that the teens were aiming to injure the innocent people shopping in a possible "knockout game"-style confrontation.
Only one person - a teen seen on camera kicking a young worker in the head - was arrested and charged with aggravated riot, aggravated assault and other counts. However, police did not release the boy's name, only saying that he was underage.
Authorities are investigating the incident and promising to track down those who took part in the attacks. They said they need the public's help in identifying the guilty parties.
"It is extremely troubling to see how many young people were involved, especially on the heels of last week's youth forum," Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said in a statement. "A lot of our citizens are working to provide safe and productive alternatives for our youth. For those that choose not to take advantage of these opportunities, we will work tirelessly to identify, locate and hold you accountable."
The mob descended on the parking lot at around 9:15 p.m. One of the first victims was a 25-year-old shopper who was heading to his car.
A woman witnessing the attacks recorded the situation on her cellphone.
"All these f--king kids, f-king hood rats," she is heard saying. Moments later, she yells "hold on, they got a white dude."
The violence grows around her until she ducks into a storefront to escape the mob. A few moments later, two young men are shown repeatedly kicking a teen in a blue Kroger shirt. The rioters tossed large pumpkins at him while he lies on the ground, trying to cover his head with his arms.
"They followed hitting him with a pumpkin," another witness told WREG-TV. "He was already unconscious, so all you could see was blood and pumpkins."
After a while, a security guard enters the scene and chases them away.
