ISIS News: New Poll Finds Majority of Americans Think Terrorist Group is a Threat
A new poll reveals that a growing number of Americans view the extreme Iraqi terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, as a direct threat and are fearful that Islamic militants are hiding out on American soil.
According to a new CNN/ORC International poll released Monday, 70 percent of Americans believe ISIS has the resources to launch an attack against the United States. It also shows that 76 percent favor additional airstrikes against the notorious terror group, and only 23 percent oppose it. Sixty-two percent of Americans support aiding forces fighting ISIS militarily, and 83 percent back the idea of providing humanitarian aid to refugees running in Iraq and Syria.
However, a majority of Americans, 61 percent, reject the idea of putting U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq and Syria to combat the terrorist group.
Furthermore, 70 percent of those surveyed think Congress should first approve the use of military action against ISIS, but 80 percent of Americans think that Congress should give President Obama the go to take military action.
Last week ISIS published a video that recorded the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff.
Sotloff, who freelanced for Time and Foreign Policy magazines, disappeared while reporting overseas in Syria in August 2013. In the gruesome video, a masked militant also addressed President Barack Obama in the video, saying, "Just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people."
Last month, ISIS released a video of the beheading of American journalist James Foley, who was reporting on the civil war in northern Syria in November 2012 when he was kidnapped by the infamous terror group, reports the New York Daily News.
The militants in the video, titled "A Message to #America (from the #IslamicState)," said the beheading was retribution for recent U.S. airstrikes in Iraq. They also threatened to kill another American journalist who is currently trapped in captivity.
