Singer and rapper Nicki Minaj was turned down by her alma mater Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in Manhattan because of the singer’s wish to bring cameras along with her. She turned to Twitter to tell her fans about what happened.

According to the New York Daily News, Minaj approached her former high school with the possibility of her speaking to students. The news incensed many LaGuardia students who said on social media they would begin a protest.

However, Minaj did not tell the whole story. An educational official told the New York Daily News that Minaj planned to bring along an MTV film crew as part of a documentary film project she is in. Department of Education policy does not allow film crews within schools without parental consent, which could not be obtained due to the limited time Minaj offered.

"Of course alumni are welcome back to our campuses, and we love to celebrate their success, providing it does not interrupt the educational process. Alumni visit all the time and address students.

“However, we do not allow reality TV to be filmed on school property. For documentaries, any visit to a public school must be educational in nature and cannot intrude on instruction,” a New York City Department of Education spokesman told Gossip Cop.

The school attempted to set up another date, according to the New York Daily News, but Minaj did not oblige.

“We suggested alternative times for the singer to appear at the school, such as a weekend date. She and MTV declined because of her tight schedule,” a source said.
