Republican Congressman Mark Sanford has called off the wedding with his Argentine fiancée Maria Belen Chapur. His strained relationship with his ex-wife led to end of the couple's relationship. Sanford chose his children over his fiancée.

The couple's relationship had caused a controversy in Sanford's home state of South Carolina, according to Politico. Sanford was the state's governor at the time and had spent taxpayers' money to fly to Argentina and visit his paramour. Soon after, Sanford divorced his wife Jenny and continued his relationship with Chapur.

Despite the controversy surrounding his divorce and tenure as governor, Sanford was elected to Congress in 2013. But, this was not enough to alleviate his personal problems, which he made public in a rambling 2,346-word Facebook post.

"I cannot do this anymore. In all life there comes a point wherein lines must be drawn in the way that we attempt to respond in ways that don't invite more in the way of conflict and add more in the way of modeling Christ's humility in giving in every instance," Sanford wrote.

"No relationship can stand forever this tension of being forced to pick between the one you love and your own son or daughter, and for this reason Belen and I have decided to call off the engagement," he added later, referring to his ex wife's constant legal battles against him.

According to the New York Daily News, his wife Jenny Sanford has accused Sanford of exposing their youngest son Blake, 16, to drug and alcohol abuse and wants to prevent the teen from being exposed "overnight to a member of the opposite sex not related to the Plaintiff or Defendant through blood or marriage who could reasonably be construed as a paramour."

Sanford's ex wife also asked for Sanford's visitation schedule to be changed and for Sanford to undergo psychiatric treatment and to finish anger management classes.

In his Facebook post Sanford denies his wife's allegations saying he drinks alcohol responsibly and has never used drugs. However, he hopes to get back together with Chapur.

"Maybe there will be another chapter when waters calm with Jenny, but at this point the environment is not conducive to building anything given no one would want to be caught in the middle of what's now happening," he wrote.
