Coca-Cola Brings Back SURGE: Facebook Movement Convinces Coke to Revive '90s Citrus Soda for Sale on Amazon
There is no doubt that social media is indeed a powerful tool, and it proved to be effective for fans that were petitioning Coca-Cola to bring back a taste of the '90s. What they were requesting was for the company to bring back Surge, and Coca-Cola has just confirmed that it will be bringing back the drink that's loaded with citrus soda, just as it was marketed before, according to Businessweek.
Surge, which made its debut in 1996, was supposed to go up against Mountain Dew of PepsiCo, but in the early 2000s, the drink was discontinued. From that time on until now, fans of the drink had been lobbying for one of their favorite beverages to grace the store shelves once again.
Facebook was used cleverly by devoted fans to get Surge back. The Facebook page got 129,000 likes and the fans later joined their resources together to buy a billboard. They had it placed outside of the Atlanta headquarters of Coca-Cola and the billboard contained a message addressed to Coca-Cola. They said that they could not buy Surge so they bought a billboard instead.
Coca-Cola North America's associate vice president of Sparkling Flavors said that the billboard and its message inspired them, who thought that it was one of the best compliments a product could wish for. It had been more than 12 years since the product had been out of the market and still there were more than 120,000 people missing it.
Coca-Cola said that Surge would be exclusively available on Amazon on a limited basis. It is the first time that an online retailer will be exclusively selling a Coca-Cola product. The President of Sparkling Products and Strategic Marketing of Coca-Cola North America Wendy Clark said that if their expectations are met by the trial, it could lead to the company launching niche products through online retailers.
Fans of Surge can now follow their favorite drink as Coca-Cola gave it its own Twitter account.
