Star Wars Episode 7 Plot, Cast, News & Rumors: Returning Darth Vader, Dead C3PO & Evil X-Wings?
"Star Wars Episode VII" is one of the most hotly-anticipated films in the industry. The film is slated for a late 2015 release that should sell out screenings for days.
There is currently little known about the film, but there are constantly new updates arriving that have created some interesting speculation.
Here are some new items to discuss:
X-Wing Pilots to Be Villains
The old cliché claims that a picture is worth a thousand words. And so it is with this image of Adam Driver on the set of the new film. The picture shows the thespian wearing what resembles the outfit traditionally associated with X-Wing pilots.
For months, reports have indicated that Driver would be playing the main villain in the film. This would lead us to believe that the X-Wing pilots could be antagonists in the film.
Or could they?
One possibility is that he has killed off a pilot and taken his wardrobe to disguise himself. Maybe he is trying to infiltrate the rebels in some way?
Or maybe Driver is a good guy for most of the film and works with the rebel pilots throughout. Maybe this is an image from early in the film when he is still on the light side and has not yet turned.
There are tons of possibilities on this one.
Could C-3PO Die?
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Anthony Daniels was asked about whether he considered killing off the character of the iconic droid C-3PO?
His response was the following:
"Humans die ... I guess, wow. ... Would he rust, gently? ... I think probably he would realize that his programming was failing, that it was too old fashioned, and Microsoft had stopped supporting that particular brand. He would see upcoming new robots and realize his power source was running out. He'd say to R2, 'Can you go down and get me a new power spectrum?' or whatever. I don't think he'd ever -- I'm looking at this image with [C-3PO having his replacement] silver leg. I think he would go on. Getting spare parts, getting surgery. And I think the people around him, humans and droids alike, would help because he would become part of their daily lives, part of their environment. They wouldn't want to let him go. You know, I'm a great do-it-yourself person at home. I mend pretty much anything I can, whether it's melting plastic with a hot skewer from the stove because the plastic is cracked, or with my glue gun mending this or that, or cannibalizing a part from something else that I kept in the workshop. I will keep objects going. I'm not from the throw-away culture, I'm from the make-and-mend culture. Threepio is nice to have around. I think he would go on and on and on."
There has been a lot of speculation about major characters getting killed off in the new film. Especially veterans. The original film killed off Obi-Wan Kenobi while "Episode VI" let Yoda, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine die.
The prequel trilogy witnessed the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, Padme Amidala, Anakin's mother, Mace Windu and a number of other major Jedi. Clearly this franchise has no issues with killing off major characters.
But a droid has yet to be done away with. Well, at least, not a major droid. R2-D2 and C-3PO have been linchpins in this franchise since Day One and from Daniels' perspective they will continue in that manner. So do not expect C-3PO could get destroyed in this film as his response indicates that director J.J. Abrams has no such intention.
Is Darth Vader Returning?
Vader is the most iconic character in the franchise and he drove the first six films (at least the anticipation of his arrival was the driving force behind the prequels).
So letting him go completely could be a bit difficult. Recent rumors have indicated that he could make a return, but there has been no confirmation. And if he were to make a return, would he simply appear in flashback? Flashbacks have never been incorporated in the previous six movies, so it might feel like a stretch. Could he appear as a force ghost? That would contradict what occurred at the end of Episode VI when Anakin's ghost, not Vader's, appeared before Luke in the triumphant ending.
