White House Breach: Secret Service Investigates, Seventh Incident in Seven Years
White House security has increased after recent trespasses into the property, the latest of which was Friday when a man with a knife scaled the fence, according to The Independent.
The Secret Service launched an investigation Saturday into how Omar Gonzalez, 42, was able to successfully enter the White House -- at a time when President Barack Obama and his family had just left, the Washington Post reported.
Within seconds, Gonzalez, who reportedly served three tours in Iraq and was a sniper, was able to get through the double doors of the North Portico before being apprehended by an officer inside.
He was found to have a folding 2.5-inch serrated-blade knife.
This is the first time someone has successfully scaled the fence and entered the mansion in such a manor, but there have been at least six other incidents of breached security.
The Independent reported that another incident this month involved an unnamed suspect, who was wearing a hat of the Pokemon character Pikachu while carrying a plush toy of the same character, jumped the fence and ran across the lawn before being apprehended.
The month prior, in August, a toddler had managed to squeeze through the fence and run across the lawn but was found by security and returned to his parents.
In June, Joseph Clifford Reel, 33, tried to crash a jeep filled with knives and bullets into a security gate. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
In May, protester Michel Bechard stripped naked after being refused access to the White House. He was arrested for assault, after having fought with security and indecent exposure.
Prior to those incidents was a breach that was recorded and played on TV in 2009 when a couple featured on the "Real Housewives of D.C." show -- Michaele and Tareq Salahi -- managed to get past two security checkpoints, despite not being on the list, into a White House party thrown in honor of the former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
And in March 2007, a 66-year-old man, Catalino Lucas Diaz, made it over the fence and claimed to have a bomb. Security found the package he had did not contain any dangerous materials.
