After months of speculation and a lot of reports on the casting for the upcoming second season of the HBO series "True Detective," the actors who will be appearing for the show's return seem to be pretty much set with Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn on deck.

However, there is one more major part to be filled in, as the slot of the reported female lead is still vacant.

The American television crime drama series written and created by Nic Pizzolatto has been swarmed with rumors ever since Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson left their respective roles to be replaced by new detectives.

Following the news noting that there would be four lead characters with a major female role, it necessarily means that there's only the female character left for fans to speculate over.

According to The Wrap, actresses recently rumored to be joining the cast included Rachel McAdams and Elisabeth Moss. However, no information on the rumor has been confirmed nor denied, allowing more space for guesswork.

According to Indie Wire, other names that are reportedly vying for the role include Jessica Biel, Jaimie Alexander, Oona Chaplin, Brit Marling, Rosario Dawson and Kelly Reilly. It appears that the network and the show's producers have a wide selection of actresses to play the role of Monterey sheriff Ani Bezzerides.

Moreover, rumors also suggest that if things go smoothly with the production of the next season, it just might begin airing mid-October, assuming that nothing else gets in the way. It's merely a guess, but given how far the producers have gone in putting Season 2 together, it's not entirely impossible.

Fans have been waiting for too long, but it's quite understandable for a series with this depth to take its time in creating more of what they have established, with new elements and stories mixed in.
