Antonio Banderas Movies: Spanish Actor Says Hollywood Is 'Just a Brand,' Plans to Work In Spain More
Antonio Banderas may have made a name for himself in the United States, but the Spanish actor recently revealed that he plans on making more films in his native land.
"I'm looking to come home and make movies here," Banderas said at a news conference promoting his upcoming film, "Automata," in San Sebastian, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Banderas, who was born in Malaga, said that the Hollywood scene has become played out.
"Hollywood has ceased to exist as such, and now it is just a brand," he said. "I might have that brand on me my whole life, but I want to do more films from my own country. I recognize the talent here and I really believe in my people."
In "Automata," Banderas plays a "sad" Jacq Vaucan with a shaved head, according to EFE. In the United States, he is also known for such films like "Evita," "Desperado" and "Mask of Zorro."
"It's true that in Hollywood, I've always had certain limitations because of my accent or ethnicity," the 54-year-old actor said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "I go straight into certain roles. I've been working in Hollywood for 23 years with a certain handicap."
Filming the $5 million Millennium Entertainment movie "Automata" brought Banderas to Spain, which was a big reason he accepted the role in the robot apocalypse movie.
"I think that with this film I complete the full rainbow of genres, but that's not the reason I chose to do the film," he said. "I am looking to work more in Spain now."
Just because Banderas hopes to work in Spain (where he is one of the few stars who the Spanish still love after making it big internationally), however, does not mean he will completely abandon his life in the United States.
"I feel like it more [working in Spain] as far as producing and directing are concerned, rather than acting, but I'm not going to close any doors," Banderas said. "In any case, I'll probably live in the U.S. and have my hub here, but I'm going to maintain a more continuous line of work with my country."
"Automata" hits select theaters on Oct. 10.
