Police say that an armed gunman opened fire at a UPS facility in Birmingham, Alabama, fatally shooting two people before killing himself Tuesday morning.

Police received multiple phone calls around 9:20 a.m. local time about the gunman, who was wearing a UPS uniform at the time of the shooting, said Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper, according to the Wall Street Journal.

However, by the time officials arrived on the scene, the shooting was over and the damage was done.

The name of the shooter has yet to be released, however AL.com reports that he is a 45-year-old white husband and father from the Argo area. 

Although it still early in the investigation, Roper revealed that officials "have a pretty good idea about what transpired inside the business." However, he added that "at this time, we have no information regarding the motivation that led to this incident."

The incident occurred at a UPS facility near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in the warehouse area of the building, police said.

"Police were contacted, and UPS is offering full cooperation to verify circumstances and personnel on site," said UPS in a statement.

A person close to UPS who had been briefed on the situation said that the shooter is believed to have been recently fired from the company. The unidentified source added that his termination was upheld last week during an appeal hearing.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital reported that it was treating "one non-gunshot-related patient" from the incident, said spokesman Tyler Greer, without disclosing further details.

 "When these people came into work today, they had no idea this would be their last day on Earth," Roper said, reports the Washington Post. "No one was doing anything risky. They were just people working at their job."
