Just three months after making the announcement on "Good Morning America" about her breast cancer diagnosis, Joan Lunden courageously posed with a bald head on the cover of People Magazine and expressed her determination to "beat" her cancer.

"I could decide to do nothing, but that's certainly not my personality," Lunden, told People about her battle with breast cancer. "I was handed an opportunity to learn everything that I can about this and try to help others."

Lunden - who  first announced her cancer diagnosis to Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America" back in June - explained that Roberts gave her some valuable advice on the day she made her shocking announcement on-air.

"Robin told me waiting for your hair to fall out is excruciating," she explained. "So I didn't want to wait."

According to People, Lunden decided to shave her head after completing her first chemotherapy treatment.

"You know it's going to happen one of these days and you are wondering how and when, so I just owned it," Lunden explained her decision to cut off her signature golden locks.

Despite her courageous effort to "own" her new look, Lunden admitted that she did find it challenging to adjust to her newly shaved head in the beginning.

"I'm almost reluctant to say it because it sounds superficial, but when you lose your hair, it just affects the way that you look at yourself in the mirror," she revealed. "You feel less feminine, pretty or desirable, and it's not an easy thing to go through."

Since deciding to "own" up to her look, Lunden is now showcasing her look to the world on the cover of People Magazine.

"I had to make this big decision about whether or not to do the cover with no hair. It certainly isn't the comfortable way to go, but I decided I was going to try and help others and show women that this isn't the end of the world," Lunden explained. "You can go on - and that was hugely empowering."
