Viacom & Nick in Africa: Nick Jr. & Nicktoons Broadcasts Extended to Sub-Saharan Africa
International channels from Viacom are expanding its entertainment channel broadcasts to DStv in Africa, where it will broadcast Nick Jr. and Nicktoons. The channels are being provided through Viacom International Media Networks as an extension of BET International's reach in South Africa.
This announcement has been part of a larger movement from Viacom to bolster its African TV offerings and deliver "more TV channels than any other international media company on the continent with a total of eight distinct entertainment brands."
Other entertainment networks include MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and VH1 Classic. MTV Africa moved in late August to a new tier of DStv, allowing them to reach more customers. VIMN Africa said these newest young-Nickelodeon channels will begin airing at the end of September.
These channels are now available to over 100 million viewers across more than 50 territories in sub-Saharan Africa. The networks offer both popular content from around the world as well as localized programming.
"We are delighted to partner with MultiChoice to strengthen our kids and family and general entertainment offering in Africa," said Alex Okosi, VIMN's senior VP and managing director. "Nick Jr., Nicktoons and BET International provide the perfect complement to our existing entertainment, music, comedy, and kids and family channels."
The CEO of VIMN, Bob Bakish, said to the Hollywood Reporter, "Africa is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world. There are more than a billion people there. We saw the [opportunity] early and have been active in the market for a long time."
Media businesses have been going strong in Africa as the middle class and economy continues to grow.
"We have seen very nice topline and bottom line growth there," Bakish said. "We love the market. This is another important step forward. ...We are going to look to continue to build [our] business in Africa."
