North Dakota Mother Allegedly Killed Newborn by Snorting Painkiller Before Breastfeeding
A North Dakota mother is accused of killing her 4-day-old son after snorting a powerful pain reliever and then breastfeeding the baby over the summer.
According to reports, ReAnne Pederson, 32, crushed a heavy pain reliever called hydrocodone before breastfeeding her newborn back in June. She then fell asleep and woke up 30 minutes later to find that her baby had stopped breathing.
The little boy was taken to Fargo Hospital and put on life support. He died less than a day later.
Family members say that Pederson also used drugs while she was pregnant with her baby boy, Avery.
One witness even told a West Fargo police officer that Pederson had smoked methamphetamine just the days before she went into labor, reports the Daily Mail.
Pederson, who has two other children, pleaded not guilty to negligent homicide on Wednesday, the Forum News Service.reported. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison.
In an interview with the newborn's grandmother, Lisa Miller, said she also blames the mother for the baby's death, telling Valley News Live, "As far as I'm concerned, if anything happens to him, she killed him."
Despite claims from other family members and friends who believe Pederson may have been using drugs, including methamphetamine, while she was pregnant, she is recognized in the newborn's obituary.
"Avery leaves his loving family. His mother, ReAnne Pederson, brother, Keegan Pederson and sister, Emmalynn Pederson," the obituary reads.
Family members also wrote, "We had all looked forward to having our precious Avery as our little brother, grandson, nephew and cousin. Even in his short life, he touched our hearts with great love and we will miss him so very much."
Pederson has been released on $5,000 bail while her older children have been placed in the care of relatives.
