Toyota USA Recalls 690,000 Pick-Ups for Suspension System Issue
Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., has announced a voluntary safety recall of approximately 690,000 model year 2005-2011 Tacoma 4x4 and Tacoma Pre-Runner pickup trucks in connection with potential suspension issues.
The automaker said it has advised the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of its plans to address problems that could arise with the involved vehicles' rear suspension systems containing leaf springs that are constructed of either three or four leaves, according to a company news release.
The company said there's a chance leaves from those systems could fracture due to stress and corrosion.
If that happens and a vehicle continues to be operated, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank.
The release continued that if a broken leaf were to make contact with the fuel tank repeatedly it could lead to a punctured tank, as well as a fuel leak. That, ultimately, could easily lead to a vehicle fire.
Toyota indicated, however, that so far it is not aware of any fires, crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with the suspected leaf problem condition.
The suspension-related recall follows a voluntary recall announced Sept. 18 of approximately 20,000 model year 2014 Avalons, Camrys, Highlanders and Siennas, and model year 2015 Lexus RX vehicles equipped with the 2GR-FE engine.
According to an earlier company news release, the end cap on the right-hand fuel delivery pipe in the engine compartment of the affected vehicles could have been insufficiently welded during manufacturing at the supplier.
If, indeed, that ends up the case, fuel could leak from a vehicle's fuel delivery pipe and, in the presence of an ignition source, could increase the risk of a vehicle fire.
Toyota confirmed in the release that it wasn't aware of any fires, crashes, injuries or fatalities caused by the fuel pipe issue either.
The automaker has informed owners of the involved vehicles that Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the fuel delivery pipe and, if it was produced at the involved supplier, replace it with a new one.
