'The Mindy Project' Season 2 Premiere, Episode 1 Review - 'All My Problems Solved Forever' Introduces James Franco As Dr. Leotard
The one thing I didn't like about "The Mindy Project" last season was that it sometime resorted to slapstick comedy to get some laughs. A perfect example was the Christmas episode (?) when Mindy got in a house party-destroying fight with Heather (Ellie Kemper) over their mutual boyfriend. Last night's season premiere fortunately showed none of that, and Season 2 is officially back, proving why Kaling's sitcom was renewed for a second season.
Basically, I loved most of the premiere, but my favorite bit was the opening. For those that watched last season, Mindy decided she was in love with Casey (Anders Holm), cut all her hair off and left with him to help the people of Haiti. Mindy's description of Haiti was humorous, but it was clear that Casey really isn't the one, even though she thinks he is. Casey proposed, the two proceeded to try and have sex, and then surprise! Mindy found out she needed emergency gallbladder surgery, which meant flying back to New York and waking up to Morgan's (Ike Barinholtz) pretty face.
We were back at Mindy's familiar practice, and guess who was there? None other than James Franco, who was giving sex therapy sessions to Danny (Chris Messina) and his on again-off again girlfriend Christina (Chloe Sevigny). Franco plays Paul Leotard (yup) who has been serving as Mindy's replacement. Mindy, of course, was immediately infatuated with him until she learned that he is indeed her replacement.
The main focus of this episode was whether Mindy actually knows what she wants, or if she just think she knows what she wants. She wanted to get married to Casey, and even agreed to have a nice, informal wedding ceremony at his apartment, something the "old" Mindy would never have considered. But then, Casey accidentally pees on her wedding dress, which is obviously a sign that maybe they're moving too quickly. In the end, it was Casey who wanted to wait, deciding that he wanted to have a fancy wedding with both their families present. He told Mindy to stay in New York while he went back to Haiti, which is what she wanted to do anyway.
Danny was in the same position as Mindy, saying that he wanted to stay with Christina even after she found porn on his computer, which was saying something loud and clear. The two had tried to have sex to Franco's awful sex therapy CD, much to Danny's dismay. While Danny said Christina was the love of his life, it's clear that his attraction to Mindy has become more pronounced. The two constantly wrote letters to each other while she was in Haiti, and Danny legit ran to her once he found out she was back. I believe the show will explore their "will they, won't they" relationship more throughout the season.
Scrubs
- I like that Tamara has been upgraded to a series regular. Xosha Roquemore delivered some hilarious lines in last night's episode. I just hope she doesn't turn into the one note stereotypical African American woman who only gets to deliver some ridiculous lines for laughs.
- The sex groans section of Franco's CD had me dying. While I don't always find Franco amusing, he was great in this premiere episode.
- Morgan was on fire in this episode, and his Bane impersonation was on point.
- Since there are now two doctor L's, Morgan would like to call Mindy "Big L."
- "Let's talk about your sperm. They're apathetic."
- Mindy on Casey's proposal: "I wanna Vine this!"
- "What's her name again? I wanna say Glob." Tamara forgot who her former boss was.
- "What'd you do? Get drunk and sass a voodoo princess?"
- "Guys, I lost three pounds of water weight from diarrhea!"
- "I have an extremely heavy tread."
