Michael Dunn Verdict: Man Found Guilty of First Degree Murder in Jordan Davis Shooting Retrial
The man who shot teenager Jordan Davis has been found guilty of first-degree murder. A Florida jury convicted Michael Dunn for shooting the unarmed black 17-year-old almost two years ago in a retrial.
The jury, comprising eight men and four women, convicted Dunn, 47, of the murder after five and half hours of deliberation, according to WXJT. Prosecution did not seek the death penalty so Dunn could face the maximum sentence of life without parole. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 17.
This is Dunn's second trial. The first trial on February found Dunn guilty of attempted second degree murder and shooting into an occupied building but was deadlocked on the murder charge. The retrial lasted only six days.
"We are very grateful that justice has been served, justice not only for Jordan, but justice for Trayvon (Martin) and justice for all the nameless, faceless children and people that will never have a voice," said Lucy McBath, Davis' mother. She was present with Davis' father Ron Davis.
"And Ron and I are committed to giving our lives to walking out Jordan's justice and Jordan's legacy."
According to CBS News, the prosecution brought the same witnesses to the retrial and painted Dunn as a cold-blooded killer. They explained how, after shooting Davis, Dunn returned to his hotel, ordered pizza and walked his dog. He never notified police of the incident.
The retrial began on Sept. 25 following the February mistrial. Dunn shot and killed Davis on Nov. 23, 2012 after a verbal altercation in which he asked Davis lower the volume coming from the SUV he was in with his friends.
During the trial, the Duval County prosecution team brought the teenagers present to testify, according to WTSP. Dunn also took to the stance in his defense and explained what happened.
"I put my window down ... and I said 'Hey, would you mind turning that down please?'" Dunn said. He claims one teenager said something derogatory and increased the volume. He then saw a gun flashed from the car's back seat.
"I reached for my weapon, in my glove box. I said 'You're not going to kill me you son of a b****,' and then I was firing, in about two seconds," he testified.
