British Tourism 2014: Three Burmese Men Held by Thai Police in Connection to Murder of British Tourists
Thai police have three Burmese men in custody who are linked to the brutal deaths of Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, two British tourists. At least one of the men has confessed to killing the tourists.
Two of the men, who have not been identified by Thai police, confessed to murdering Witheridge, 23, and Miller, 24, on the Thai island of Koh Tao, according to the Associated Press. The third worker denied partaking in the two British tourists' murders.
"We are interrogating them. So far, accounts from the two men matched and they confessed they killed the tourists," Police Maj. Gen. Kiattipong Khawsamang told the Associated Press via telephone.
Regional police commissioner Maj. Gen. Decha Budnampetch said on Friday that DNA results taken from Witheridge's body matched that of the men held. Police await a court arrest warrant but continue to hold the men.
"Together with other evidence and (testimony from witnesses) that we have collected thoroughly throughout the investigation, we are convinced that these two migrant workers were the killers," Decha said.
According to the AFP, Thailand has a large immigrant population comprised of Burmese and Cambodians. These low-paid workers have often been used as scapegoats in crimes but the Thai police promised to thoroughly investigate the murders. They took DNA samples from scores of people on Koh Tao and the men's confessions link them to the murder.
"Both raped the female victim," Police Maj. Gen. Khawsamang said. The men confessed to sexually abusing Witheridge.
The bodies of Witheridge and Miller were discovered on the popular tourist destination on Sept. 15, according to the Wall Street Journal. Witheridge was found half naked with her head battered and hacked with a hoe, an initial police report said. Miller was found with severe head wounds.
Kao Toh is located some 250 miles south of the Thai capital of Bangkok.
