The Lifetime network released a sneak preview of the TV-movie on late pop superstar Aaliyah. The biopic, titled "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B," follows the young singer's rise to fame following her appearance on "Star Search" until her tragic death in an airplane crash in 2001.

Actress and Nickelodeon star Alexandra Shipp is playing the title role.

In the new trailer, Aaliyah's mother warns her daughter of what it takes to be successful in the music industry.

"It takes more than some hot producer to create a superstar," she says at the start of the trailer. "It takes the right artist."

A subsequent montage of scenes from the film follow: one of Aaliyah dancing with backup performers, another of her signing autographs for screaming fans and another of her preparing to go out on stage to perform one of her chart-topping hits. The trailer is set to the song "Goddess" by Iggy Azalea.

Lifetime originally secured Zendaya Coleman to play Aaliyah in the TV-movie, but she was replaced by Shipp, 23, in July after dropping out of the role. Coleman said she received a "lot of hate" and Aaliyah's family wasn't keen on the movie being made.

"I had my process with that and I think I just wanted to wish my love and luck onto the next woman because it's not easy to take on that role," Zendaya told E! News. "Especially with all the things that I dealt with, I don't want her to have to deal with that. I feel like I'm on her side."

However, the project has been catching a lot of flak from fans, and this later trailer is no exception. The choice of music in the trailer is being criticized since it has nothing to do with the artist being portrayed. However, Aaliyah fans probably don't realize the film likely won't have any of her songs included either.

"Aaliyah's family has been vocal about their disapproval of the project, and without them on board Lifetime won't be able to use any actual Aaliyah music in the film, leaving the makers to face the challenge of depicting the life of a musician without being able to even touch on the actual music they made," Entertainment Weekly Miles Raymer said.

The trailer can be seen here, and the full "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B" airs on Lifetime Nov. 15.
