College Football News: Treon Harris, Florida Gators Quarterback, Accused of Sexual Assault
The University of Florida is conducting an investigation on Treon Harris after a female student accused the Gators quarterback of sexually assaulting her on Sunday morning.
According to a Gainesville Police Department report, the alleged sexual assault incident took place at around 3 a.m. EST on Sunday inside a campus residence hall.
The GPD, along with the University of Florida Police Department, are still gathering information about the alleged incident. The GPD also said in a statement that they are not planning to file charges, pointing out that the case falls under the UFPD's jurisdiction.
While investigations are still ongoing, University of Florida president Bernie Machen said in a statement that the Harris will be barred from participating in all team activities until he is cleared of any wrongdoings.
"We have no tolerance for sexual assault on our campus," Machen said via ESPN. "The university is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for every member of the UF community. We must strive to protect all of our students from sexual harassment and assault, and do everything in our power to promote a safe learning environment."
Harris has not been arrested for the accusation against him, and his attorney, Huntley Johnson, is not expecting an arrest, saying that they are cooperating fully with the authorities.
"We are cooperating with the investigation," Johnson said via Boston Globe. "And I would be surprised and disappointed if he ends up being prosecuted."
The accusation is a big blow to the freshman quarterback as he was expected to get strong consideration to start for the Gators in their upcoming game against LSU on Saturday.
Harris substituted starter Jeff Driskel on Saturday and made immediate impact for the team, helping the Gators escape with a 10-9 win against the Tennessee Volunteers. The Miami native completed 4-of-6 passes for 165 yards with two touchdowns.
It is still unknown at this point how long the investigation, but Driskel, who has only completed 76-of-139 passes this season for 695 yards with two six interceptions, is expected to start on Saturday.
