Golden Boy Promotions was supposed to announce Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's next fight against Saul Cotto, but Oscar De La Hoya revealed that the former world champion might be done this year.

De La Hoya told reporters that Alvarez's scheduled fight on Dec. 6 will not push through after Canelo complained about a persistent ankle injury, which will put him on the sidelines for the next six weeks.

Alvarez reportedly told De La Hoya about his hurting left ankle injury that has been bothering him since his training camp for his fight against Erislandy Lara in July.

Alvarez has already started training for his Dec. 6 fight, which was supposed to be against Joshua Clottey of Ghana, but his ailing ankle prevented him from doing his usual routine, which forced the former light middleweight champion to cancel his planned bout.

"He can't run the five or six miles a day he usually does," De La Hoya said of Canelo via ESPN. "So he made the decision to take care of it. He finally got it looked at by the doctor, and the good news is that there is nothing broken, nothing torn. He has, like, a muscle strain."

The Hall of Fame boxer said that they are still studying their options for Canelo's return fight, but De La Hoya reiterated that he will make sure that Alvarez will fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend on May 2.

De La Hoya also added that Canelo's next fight could now be against Miguel Cotto, who has been linked to the Mexican over the past several months. Cotto was also supposed to fight in December, but also decided to cancel the first defense of his World Boxing Council middleweight title.

"Going right to a Cotto fight is a big possibility," De La Hoya said. "I will be talking to Canelo and his management team in the next couple of days to see what they want to pursue. This is a minor setback. I am more than positive Canelo will have the opportunity to fight live on HBO, even if it's not next. But I hear in Canelo's voice the enthusiasm about fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend."
