Boxing News 2014: Canelo Alvarez Won't Take Joshua Clottey Lightly in Dec. 6 Fight
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will not take Joshua Clottey lightly, saying that his next opponent is capable of pulling off an upset in their scheduled fight on Dec. 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Alvarez, who holds an impressive 44-1-1 record with 31 knockouts, considered several fighters for his next fight before settling with Clottey, who has a 38-4 record with 22 stoppage victories.
While most analyst and fans believe that Alvarez picked an easy foe, Canelo reiterated that he is expecting a tough night against Clottey in their 12-round, non-title fight.
"You have a strong fighter in Clottey," Alvarez said via BoxingScene. "He's very strong and anything can happen. He's a fighter with a lot of experience. He's been tested, he's coming off a very, very good win and at this level anything can happen. No fight is easy."
Clottey is no stranger to big fights as he has scored wins against boxing stars Diego Corrales and Zab Juddah, and also engaged in a close fight against Miguel Cotto in June 2009.
However, Clottey's stock went down significantly after taking a lopsided decision loss to then-pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in March 2010, but he is slowly climbing up the ladder again.
After losing to Pacquiao, Clottey racked up three straight victories, including his unanimous decision win against Anthony Mundine on April 9 in New South Wales, Australia.
Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya recently said that he was impressed with Clottey's win against Mundine, saying that the Ghanaian will be a good opponent for Alvarez.
"He is coming off a big win over Anthony Mundine, where he knocked him down five or six times," De La Hoya said of Clottey on Sunday. "It was a great victory. He looked good, strong. He went the distance with Pacquiao, Margarito, and had a close fight with Cotto. Clottey is strong and he'll be right in front of you."
The Alvarez-Clottey fight, which is expected to be announced officially next week, will be televised via HBO after Canelo decided to leave Showtime.
