PBS 'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Spoilers, Premiere Date: Laura Carmichael Says She's Treated Differently From Michelle Dockery
"Downton Abbey" actress Laura Carmichael admits that she doesn't get the same treatment as her co-star Michelle Dockery because Carmichael is known for playing the less glamorous Crawley sister.
In an interview with Radio Times, Carmichael was surprised to see what reviews had to say after the first episode of "Downton Abbey" premiered in 2010.
"It was really funny opening the newspaper and reading the reviews and going, 'Oh, I'm playing the ugly one,'" she said according to Daily Mail. "I hadn't thought of that."
Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley on the British hit show, even said she gets treated differently from Dockery, who was at first known as Edith's prettier older sister, Lady Mary Crawley.
"We definitely have a different way," Carmichael explained according to The Telegraph. "I've watched people talk to Michelle like she's the queen -- she's Lady Mary."
Still, Carmichael admits to getting her share of special treatment.
"I have so many amazing opportunities I go, 'Is it really fair?' And sometimes it's embarrassing I get so many treats,'" the 28-year-old actress said.
The show is currently airing its fifth season in Britain on ITV, but Carmichael says the show will eventually end as Julian Fellowes, "Downton Abbey" creator, sees fit.
"I know it's his intentions to write until that point that seem right [to stop]," Carmichael shared. "It won't be on forever."
Season 5 of "Downton Abbey" starts in the U.S. on PBS on Jan. 4, 2015.
Warning: Spoilers below.
Earlier this month, Dockery teased that her character would start to accept the death of her husband Matthew, who was played by Dan Stevens.
"Mary ... is kind of toying with the idea of having an intimate relationship with a man before she decides to settle down with him," she said. "When I read that I thought 'God this is incredibly modern for the time.' But of course it wasn't, that was what was happening. There's much more comparison now in relation to the times than there was in the beginning."
