The Game New Season and Series Finale News: BET to End Show After Season 9
On Monday, BET announced its decision to end the hit scripted series, "The Game" after 9 seasons.
"The Game" recently ended its 7th season, and BET production is currently underway to ensure that the final two seasons of the show "end on a high note by giving Sabers fans a chance to bid farewell to their favorite players on and off the field," reads the BET statement obtained by MadameNoire.
"The Game's" producer, Mara Brock Akil also came forward to explain her reasoning behind the decision to end the show.
During an interview with BET, Akil explained that "shows do end" and that she is very happy that BET offered the show five additional seasons to flourish on-air.
"We made history when we got to the network and it's nice to be able to celebrate the great achievements of the show," Akil said.
"The Game" first premiered on the CW network back in 2006 and was cancelled after three seasons. BET later picked up the show in 2011 and aired the first episode of the fourth season in January garnering over 7.7 million viewers for the season's premiere.
In addition to praising the show of its success, Akil also recalled the time when the show had humble beginnings.
"I'm really proud of the look of our show, that we took a multi-cam budget and turned it into a single camera show. Its look, its tone, its approach, the characters' development - that, yes, we were a half-hour comedy but we used our moments to deepen the characters. We also offered drama in a half-hour space," she added.
MadameNoire suggests that the final two seasons of "The Game" should bring back characters Melanie and Derwin Davis. Melanie and Derwin were played by original "The Game" cast members Tia Mowry Hardict and Pooch Hall, who left the show after its fifth season.
So far, Mowry and Hall have yet to confirm their return.
