Univision Shows 2014: Network to Launch Premios Univision Deportes in December
Univision hosts a series of award shows throughout the year, and it is now adding a new one to the mix.
The network announced that it will be launching Premios Univision Deportes, or Univision Sports Awards, which is designed to honor the athletes, teams and sports that Latinos are most interested in, according to a Univision press release.
The show will be two hours long and it will focus on soccer, basketball, baseball, football, racing and boxing. The show will air on UniMás on Dec. 18 at 9 p.m, and it will take place in Miami. It will also be broadcast on Univision Deportes Network.
There will also be performances by Latino artists and a one-hour red carpet pre-show that will air on UDN.
There's no word on if there will be a host for the show, but athletes and Univision regulars will present awards.
"As the home of sports for Hispanic America, we are proud to acknowledge and celebrate the athletes and sports talent who make an impact in our communities," said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, the president of Univision Deportes. "Creating a show as Premios Univision Deportes is another great step in delivering the type of engaging content that our viewers are most passionate about."
There will be 25 winners, and some of the awards will be a Lifetime Achievement Award, a Humanitarian Award and a Community Activist Award. The Community Activist will be selected by fans. There will be some other awards that are also fan selected, but journalists, retired athletes and broadcasters will help decide who else wins other awards.
Nominees have not been announced yet, but some of the athletes who will likely be nominated will come from the World Cup, where many Latin American countries had a strong showing, with Costa Rica making the quarterfinals and several Central and South American nations advancing to the Round of 16. James Rodriguez was the breakout star of the entire tournament.
