Man Climbs Out of Subway Grate and Launches Smoke Bomb at NYC Restaurant [Video]
Police are searching for a man who was caught on video throwing a smoke bomb into a New York City restaurant on Friday.
In a video clip released by police, a man appears to climb out of sidewalk grate in downtown Manhattan and then hurl a smoke bomb into the Bar Pitti restaurant in Greenwich Village. The suspect then quickly disappeared under the gate, reports the Gothamist.
The incident, which occurred around 5:45 p.m. Friday night, prompted dozens of police officers and the NYPD Bomb Squad to investigate the scene, reports CBS New York.
Officials say the suspect was wearing an American flag t-shirt when he suddenly emerged from the grate that leads up from the subway system. He then threw the device, which emitted red smoke.
According to the restaurant's manager, an employee grabbed the device and tossed it back outside.
Fortunately, no one was injured, said police.
However, one witness complained on Twitter that the smoke stung her eyes.
"Someone just threw two red smoke bombs into the restaurant I was eating in. Eyes are burning. #NYCWHAT," wrote Twitter user @RoseMcGowan.
Hours later, police cleared the sidewalk café to open its doors as a police officer stood outside.
"It's New York. We have troglodytes," said Manhattan resident Hal Hayes about the bizarre incident. "They live down in the tunnels. They come out when they need some air."
"Is your lovely little restaurant on somebody's hit list?" said Manhattan resident Cleve Harp.
Other witnesses took the attack more seriously.
My "first thought was ISIS, with everything going on. It's scary. It's nerve-wracking, as a native Long Islander coming to the city for dinner with friends and family," said tourist Kay Maygothling. "I'm glad I didn't bring my daughter."
While the motive behind the attack is unclear, police have ruled out terrorism.
