The smartphone community has spoken, and unsurprisingly, Goliath has come out on top once more. Early reports indicate that Apple has just broken a sales record with its new generation of iPhones, the iPhone 5S and 5C.

"This is our best iPhone launch yet --more than nine million new iPhones sold -- a new record for first weekend sales," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.

The two new cell phones debuted in stores to much fanfare on September 20th. Their sale of 9 million units far outpaces the opening week numbers for their predecessor, the iPhone 5. That model was only able to move a comparably paltry 5 million units.

"The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly," said Cook in a news release. "We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."

The iPhone 5s brings with it several new features that have no doubt attracted many consumers to it during the first weekend of sales. Not only does the smart phone now come with a gold color option, but it also comes with the overhauled iOS 7 as well as Touch ID, which allows users to access their phone via a fingerprint sensor.

The iPhone 5c comes in a much wider array of colors, and was introduced as the more affordable option to the 5s. The 5c retails for a mere $99 with a two-year contract, while the 5s is currently going for $199. So far, the 5s has dominated its cheaper cousin in sales.

"In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined now represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile. From the data we are seeing, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s and just 0.31% are iPhone 5c," reports Localytics.

Apple's new operating system, iOS 7, has also been a rousing success thus far. Less than a week after its introduction into the market, iOS 7 has already been adopted by over 200 million Apple devices, which Apple claims is the fastest software update in history.
