Michelle Obama 'Turnip for What' Video: First Lady Makes Health-Focused Video Based on DJ Snake, Lil John Song
First Lady Michelle Obama created an original and hilarious video response to advocate for healthy eating campaigning.
Obama posted a six-second video on the appropriately named app Vine, where she posed with a turnip and asked "Turnip for what?" The video quickly went viral, spreading across the Internet like wildfire.
The phrase is a fun pun on the summer smash by DJ Snake and Lil Jon "Turn Down for What." The track has also become a near-anthem for voter-registration efforts aimed at young people.
The First Lady has always been a big promoter of eating heathy, fresh produce and known for her White House garden. When Vine user and President Obama impersonator Iman Crossman, a.k.a. AlphaCat, used the hashtag #AskTheFirstLady to ask how many calories are burned when she "turns up," Obama found a great outlet for her cause.
In her perfect response and redirection of the conversation, the First Lady and mother-of-two offered both a comedic response to the joking question as well as a platform to show how political figures are relating to younger voters. As Time reporter Daniel D'Addario said, "Perhaps this is the easiest and most cost-effective way to remind a generally disaffected young voter base of the appeals of the Obama presidency leading into the midterm elections. Or maybe the First Lady really just wanted to boogie with a root vegetable."
Both the President and his wife have appeared on late-night talk shows and scripted sitcoms, but this is one of the few unscripted glimpses Americans have had of the First Lady on her own.
DJ Snake, a French music producer, was elated with the news that the FLOTUS was a listener.
"NOBODY can't talk to me this week," he tweeted Tuesday with a link to the video after its release.
At time of press, the First Lady's Vine had over 8.5 million "loops," or counted plays, on Vine in just 15 hours.
