Manny Pacquiao Next Fight: Freddie Roach Wants ‘Pacman’ to Face Danny Garcia After Bout With Chris Algieri
Trainer Freddie Roach revealed that Manny Pacquiao will likely go down to the junior welterweight division and face Danny Garcia after his upcoming fight against Chris Algieri that is scheduled on Nov. 22 in Macau, China.
Pacquiao has fought at the middleweight division in eight of his last fights and will face Algieri at 144-pound catchweight, but Roach believes that the Filipino boxing icon will be more effective fighting at the light welterweight limit of 140 pounds moving forward.
"I just think it's much better for Manny to fight at 140," Roach said in an interview with Rappler. "He's much more productive at that weight. It's much more natural for him to fight at that weight."
The Hall of Fame trainer pointed out that Pacquiao was only forced to move up to the 147-pound division because the big fighters are there, insisting that the former pound-for-pound king is more dangerous at the junior welterweight division.
"He's not a 147-pounder, he only forced himself to be a 147-pounder because that's where the money was but I think he's going to be a much more effective fighter at 140. I don't care who is there, we'll beat them all," Roach said.
And in the event Pacquiao agrees to move down in weight, several fighters are expected to lobby for a shot against him, including Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Adrien Broner, Ruslan Provodnikov and Lamont Peterson.
Roach said that he wants Pacquiao to face Garcia, the reigning World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion.
However, the veteran trainer expressed doubt that Garcia and his adviser Al Haymon will agree to face Pacquiao, saying that all fighters under Haymon are afraid of Pacquiao because they know that they don't have a chance to beat the 35-year-old champion.
"Al Haymon will not fight Manny Pacquiao, guarantee that. Because they're scared, all of them," Roach said. "His lead guy all the way down. It's not going to happen. All of the excuses about they don't like Bob Arum; it's just excuses. Al Haymon, I met him twice, he's a very nice guy but I don't think he's good for boxing."
