Will Smith and Kevin James Developing “Hitch” Television Series for Fox
Fox network developers have given a script commitment to create a half-hour comedy television series based on the feature film "Hitch," starring Will Smith, Kevin James and Eva Mendes.
The 2005 movie about the professional date doctor Alex "Hitch" Hitchens who is a mess in his own relationships will serve as inspiration for the series, and will be written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, the team behind romantic comedies like "Made of Honor," "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Leap Year." Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television will be executive producing. Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, along with Overbrook's James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett, will serve as executive producers as well.
Details about the format of the show are limited, but The Hollywood Reporter said the comedy show concept will be set in the workplace and explore dating and sexual politics. There also is no information about who will fill the titular role, whether Smith will reprise the part or it will be recast. Bustle has an interesting list of some replacement actors they feel would fit well into the role.
Sony and Overbrook have previously begun plans to recreate the movie into television series in 2007 and 2010 with different writers to CBS and Fox but never moved forward. The film grossed almost $370 million at the box office worldwide after its release.
This series is the latest in a recent string of television remakes of popular films. Many of these projects also have the original producers on board to transition the content to the small screen.
"Hitch" joins Fox's list of attempted revivals, which includes "Big" and "Monster-In-Law." CBS is bringing back "Rush Hour" and "In Good Company," while NBC has a full plate with reboots of "Problem Child," "The Money Pit" and "Marley & Me."
