Actor Richard Gere and wife, Carey Lowell are headed for splitsville - and sadly unlike his "Pretty Woman" acting roles, there is no happy ending here or the rescuing of a damsel in distress.

According to People, a friend of the couple, confirmed that Gere and Lowell have separated, saying, "They'll do everything possible to keep things amicable and put their child first."

However, there was no comment from Gere's camp.

In a past interview with Access Hollywood, Gere was asked what was the secret to a happy marriage, and the actor responded uncomfortably, saying to always respond with, "Yes, dear."

In a separate interview on the red carpet, Access Hollywood also inquired about Gere being seen in the Hamptons with a married woman, but the actor denied the rumor.

The couple, who always appeared to be happy and in love, were married for 11 years.

According to the New York Post, the pair has been living apart for some time, with Gere, 64, staying at their property in Bedford, N.Y., and Lowell, 52, at their historic mansion in North Haven, N.Y., People added.

Marriage may not have been in the cards for either person -- Gere was married to supermodel Cindy Crawford and Lowell, who was also a former model and actress, was married twice to fashion photographer John Stember and to actor-director Griffin Dunne.
