The jury is still out on whether or not Louis van Gaal could turn Manchester United's fortunes around this season, but veteran Arjen Robben believes that his former coach is the right man for the job.

Manchester United are aiming to get back on top of the Barclays Premier League after a disappointing year last season when they finished seventh, causing them a spot for the UEFA Champions League this season.

Robben, who played for Van Gaal with the Netherlands national team and German club Bayern Munich, has all the tools to lead Manchester United back to respectability.

"He is the right man for United, definitely," Robben said of Van Gaal via ESPN. "That is what I will always say."

Manchester United are off to a slow start this season, claiming just 13 points in their first nine league games with three wins, four draws and two defeats.

Robben is aware of Manchester United's struggles this season, but the 30-year-old midfielder said that Van Gaal just needs time to turn the tables.

"In the beginning, when it wasn't going so well for him at United, people were asking me about it, but I will always tell them to have confidence in him," Robben said. "It will come, it just needs time. He has brought a lot of new players in, so he needs time to build, but he can really build a team."

Van Gaal was successful during his stay at Bayern Munich and also led Netherlands to a third-place finish during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Robben said that Van Gaal's "intensity" is the key because he could get the best out of every player in his team.

"Van Gaal is the kind of guy who can really make individual players better," Robben added. "It was the most important step of my career to go from Real Madrid to Bayern. It was the best move of my career, coming here and working under him. It really gave me a lot of confidence and a new way of working."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, whose team settled for a 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday, echoed Robben's statement, saying that the Red Devils "have one of the best managers in the world."

"They are in great hands," Mourinho said of Manchester United via New York Daily News. "In the same way I had last year to build, obviously I need more but I don't think I am lucky to have five, ten or fifteen years to build, so I need to build quick. But Louis, with time, will make a fantastic team."
