NY Knicks Roster & Rumors: Phil Jackson Believes Marc Gasol Perfect for ‘Triangle Offense’
The New York Knicks will reportedly make a run at signing Marc Gasol when the Memphis Grizzlies superstar becomes a free agent next summer.
Previous reports indicated that the Knicks will be very busy after the upcoming 2014-15 NBA season as new team president Phil Jackson vows to turn the team into a perennial contender.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that Gasol is one of the top players on New York's list with sources saying that Jackson is convinced that the Spaniard is perfect for the "Triangle Offense" that new coach Derek Fisher will implement in the upcoming season.
Gasol's ability to score in the post and hit elbow jumpers consistently along with his high basketball IQ and accurate passing are all qualities of a center that is perfect to anchor the vaunted offensive system.
"The New York Knicks don't appear positioned to be a championship contender in the near future. But could that change by pairing Gasol with Carmelo Anthony?" Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal wrote via Pro Basketball Talk. "There already is a strong belief that Knicks boss Phil Jackson will target Gasol because of his belief that Gasol is the quintessential center to play in the triangle offense."
However, signing Gasol will be easier said than done for the Knicks because several teams are expected to pursue Gasol, including the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics.
Basketball Insiders recently reported that the Celtics are also expected to make a strong push to sign Gasol next summer to shore up their frontline in the hope of convincing superstar point guard Rajon Rondo to stay.
Gasol and the Grizzlies might start discussing a contract extension, but previous reports indicated that both sides might decide to wait until the offseason.
When asked about his current contract situation with the Grizzlies, Gasol said that he is not yet worried about it.
"That's so far down the line that it's not on my mind. I just want to do my freaking job every day," said Gasol, who averaged 14.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. "You never know what might happen in seven or eight months. The franchise might go in a different direction. We're going to see how we all feel in July."
