MLB World Series 2014 Game 7 Results, Scores & Highlights: Madison Bumgarner Lifts San Francisco Giants to Third Title in Five Years
World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner threw five scoreless innings and Pablo Sandoval powered the offense with 3 hits in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series Wednesday night in Kansas City to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals, helping the Giants win their third World Series title in five years with a 4-3 series win in a Fall Classic for the ages.
Soon-to-be free agent Sandoval, born in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, went 3-for-3 on the night at bat and caught the final out of the series, a pop-up in the left infield, to end a tense ninth inning and a memorable series.
Tim Hudson started for the Giants, but there was no doubt Bumgarner would pitch on Wednesday on short rest. With the Giants ahead 3-2 after the fourth inning, Bumgarner came out of the bullpen to pitch five scoreless innings en route to a thrilling victory.
"Innings, I wasn't thinking about innings or pitch count. I was just thinking about getting outs, getting outs until I couldn't get them anymore and we needed someone else," Bumgarner said via ESPN. "Fortunately, was able to get some quick innings and I was able to stay in there."
After leading the Giants to a victory during the series opener, Bumgarner threw 117 pitches in a shutout in Game 5 on Sunday. After taking just two days of rest, Bumgarner threw 68 pitches, earning praises from Giants manager Bruce Bochy.
"What a warrior he is, and truly incredible what he did throughout the postseason," Bochy said of Bumgarner. "I just told him I just can't believe what he accomplished through all this. He's such a humble guy, and we rode him pretty good."
With his performance on Wednesday, Bumgarner, who was named series Most Valuable Player, improved his World Series record to 4-0 and one save with an impressive 0.25 ERA to go along with three championship rings to boast. The 25-year-old allowed just one run and 14 hits in 36 innings in five World Series appearances.
Lorenzo Cain, who helped the Royals tie the series in game six on Tuesday, said after the match that they could have won the series had the Giants decided to rest Bumgarner for the series decider.
"We probably would have won if they didn't have him, but they do have him," Cain said after the match.
