Killer Hornets: 28 People Stung to Death in China, Hundreds Injured by Deadly Swarms
Giant killer hornets swarm people, killing and injuring hundreds. Sounds like something straight out of a horror flick doesn't it? But in central China it's a reality.
Chinese officials have warned citizens to avoid walking through fields because deadly hornets have been attacking people. At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds seriously injured as a result of swarms of the insects stinging people without warning or cause.
A mother and son died after the killer swarms surrounded them. A man who tried to help the two suffered kidney failure after the hornets chased the man for 200 meters repeatedly stinging him on the head and legs, reported The Mirror.
Experts identified the deadly hornets as the Asian giant hornet, which grows up to 5cm in length. Its stinger is longer than 6 millimeters.
This predator has jaws strong enough to chew through protective bee suits. They can spray venom that dissolves the human flesh.
According to a National Geographic documentarym if their venom lands in eyes the tissue will melt.
Their stingers, which are highly toxic, may lead to anaphylactic shock and renal failure. These hornet attacks are an annual problem but have gotten worst this year, probably caused by the warmer weather boosting the breeding, The Guardian reported.
Deputy director of the Shaanxi Bee and Wasp Industry Association, Li Jiuzhou, stated that hundreds to thousands of hornets might live in a single nest.
They supposedly only attack humans when disturbed said Jiuzhou. But they are carnivorous beings that can quickly destroying bee colonies.
