Wii U Video Game Sales and Release Update: 'Mario Kart 8,' 'Super Smash Bros.' May Help Nintendo Game Console See Profits This Fiscal Year
The push to get more players to their system is in full gear for Nintendo as the Wii U console has been a relative disappointment for the Japanese video game creator.
The Wii U has reached approximately 7.3 million units sold, which may seem like a ton, but remember this is the two-year anniversary of the Wii U. Compared to Microsoft's Xbox One, which has sold about 5 million (in one year, reported numbers) and Sony's PlayStation 4, which has sold about 9 million (reported numbers), Wii U is really lagging behind.
But things aren't all doom and gloom. Just because Nintendo's numbers aren't exactly where the company would like them doesn't mean the company is in the red. In fact, they are on schedule to make a profit for the fiscal year.
This is partially thanks to "Mario Kart 8." Nintendo was not expecting the huge number of sales of the game, which ended up being a huge hit and selling like hotcakes.
Thanks to "Mario Kart 8," Nintendo Chief Executive Satoru Iwata will likely have a much better holiday season. He has been dealing with some health issues and the stress of a poor selling game console probably didn't help.
Once Iwata gets back to health, he will get to see an array of games coming out for the holidays.
Of course, Iwata, and all Nintendo fans are looking forward to the release of the next installation of the ultra-popular cartoon fighting game "Super Smash Bros." for Wii U. The reason why "Super Smash Bros." is so eagerly anticipated is because it was announced over a year ago with a TBA release date. Finally, it got a release date of Nov. 21, the Friday before the busiest shopping day of the year sometimes referred to as Black Friday.
