Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is convinced that Amir Khan has the tools to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the Briton gets a shot against the former pound-for-pound king next year.

Roach said in an interview with RingTV that Khan is talented enough to score an upset against Mayweather, saying that the Bolton, England native's speed and athleticism could give Floyd Jr. headaches if the fight pushes through.

"I always thought Amir had the talent to maybe beat someone like Mayweather. I think it's a very good fight for Amir. I give him a very good chance to win that fight," Roach said. "He's fast, he's athletic. He's a pretty good puncher, not a great puncher. He has all the abilities in the world."

However, Roach said that Khan should use his skills to his advantage in order to have a chance against the unbeaten welterweight and light middleweight champion.

Khan has won in his last three fights since hiring Virgil Hunter as his trainer, but Roach, who trained Khan from 2008-2012, said that the 27-year-old is making a mistake in changing his fighting style, reiterating that the former light welterweight champion has become a "boring" fighter.

"Virgil Hunter, his new trainer has him holding instead of getting out of the pocket, throwing combinations and hold," Roach said. "He's becoming a little bit of a boring fighter. I don't like this style for him but that's out of my hands at this point."

Khan, who holds a 29-3 record with 19 knockouts victories, will go up against Devon Alexander for the World Boxing Council silver welterweight title on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas where a convincing win would put him closer to landing a bout against Mayweather.

Khan, who will be fighting at the welterweight division just for the second time in his career, vowed to prove that he is one of best 147-pound fighters by scoring an impressive win against Alexander.

"I want to show everybody that I'm a major force at 147 pounds and I'm ready to take on the best," Khan said via BoxingScene. "This fight with Alexander has been on the table for a while, but it is finally happening and I plan on winning impressively to show that I am truly one of the best welterweights in the world."
