Robert Griffin Return, Injury & Fantasy Update: Washington's QB Says He is Still a Franchise Quarterback
Robert Griffin III has no doubts in mind that he is still the Washington Redskins' franchise quarterback despite being hit by another injury this season.
Griffin, who dislocated his ankle in his second game this season, confidently said in an interview that the Redskins are still his team, saying that he expects to continue to start for Washington moving forward.
The 24-year-old quarterback made his return on Monday during their 29-26 loss to the Minnesota Vikings where he completed 18-of-28 passes for 251 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
After the game, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said that it remains to be seen whether or not they will move one with Griffin as their starting quarterback or settle with Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.
"You start out with Robert, you give him all the reps in training camp and then he hurts his ankle and then he misses five or six weeks," Gruden said via Washington Post. "We get a good look at Kirk. We get a good look a Colt. And now it's back to Robert. So, the jury is still out on that position."
When asked about Gruden's statement about the team's QB situation, Griffin believes that his job is not in jeopardy, but he conceded that he needs to get healthy in order to prove that he is the team's franchise quarterback.
"What he's saying is, 'Coming into this year, everybody has got a clean slate. Everybody has to prove why they should be here.' And I haven't been out there," Griffin said via ESPN. "Availability is the key, so my job is to continue to go out there, get better each week, help this team win and the rest will take care of itself."
Griffin is also aware that most of their fans and NFL analysts are criticizing him after he was sacked five times on Sunday for holding the ball too long. In their next seven games, the former Baylor standout vowed to prove his worth.
"I understand everybody has a criticism," Griffin said. "But you have to prove yourself every day in this league. I take that mindset toward it, but when it comes to being the franchise guy, I believe that I am. I believe this organization knows that I am and I know those guys in the locker room believe that I am."
