'Into the Woods' New Movie Trailer: Disney Fairy Tale Film to Feature Meryl Streep Singing [Watch]
A new trailer has been released for Disney's star-studded upcoming fairy tale film "Into the Woods." The musical movie has a more clear direction in this trailer than the first look in previews.
The ensemble cast of "Into the Woods" mashes multiple children's stories into one picture. Characters include Cinderella, played by "Pitch Perfect's" Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp as a sinister-looking big bad wolf, two princes played by Billy Magnussen and Chris Pine, but the star of this trailer is the Witch, played by the incomparable Meryl Streep.
In the clip, Streep shows off her singing ability and a look at the impressive makeup and special effects of her magical transformation. Surprisingly, none of the other stars, including Kendrick who debuted her skills in the popular "Pitch Perfect," are seen singing on-screen.
According to the project's IMDB page, Streep's Witch "conspires to teach important lessons to various characters of popular children's stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel."
Director Rob Marshall is a seasoned leader, also directing and winning the 2002 Oscar for "Chicago," as well as "Memoirs of a Geisha" and Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." The musical was written for the stage in 1987 by veteran theater writing team James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim.
Back in June, Sondheim told The New Yorker that his play had been watered down for the big screen, but later backed down from those comments. This trailer strongly gives the film a kid-friendly appeal, along with a PG rating, although the play allegedly toys with much darker and adult subjects.
Clearly, Disney's aim is to tweak "Into the Woods" in whatever way to secure families will visit the theaters over the holidays, when the film premieres.
"Into the Woods" is set to debut on Christmas Day.
