FIFA 15 Ultimate Team News Update & Review: Gameplay, Presentation Disappoints in Latest Soccer Simulator
When I bought FIFA 15 for the Xbox 360, I had lofty expectations. However, I was cautiously optimistic.
The game is great with tons of teams, players and great commentary, but it does have its areas of weaknesses.
Soccer is a hard game to display, no matter how good your TV is. The problem lies with cameras and the massive soccer field (pitch).
Right out of the box, I quickly played an exhibition match. It was known as an international friendly. I put the skill level as high as it would go and picked a Berlin club team. From there, I picked the highest rated team to play against me.
The game was similar to any FIFA game in the past. The easiest way to score is get the ball to the wings and then cross it into the middle. Still, the computer's artificial intelligence is smarter than in previous games. I found tons of openings and scoring opportunities.
From there, I got frustrated. I got frustrated because it was next to impossible to score. The goalie always came out and made a remarkable save or tripped me down, and one of his defenders would clear the ball out.
The game's controls and movement were simple, and it's very easy to pick up and play.
When the camera zooms in on players, you can see their faces, and it's nice to see the attention to detail that EA Sports put into this part of the game.
Where the game falls short is the actual soccer gameplay. The default camera angle is too far away, and it seems like they could find a way to zoom in further without zooming in too close. I didn't want to mess with the settings, but I feel like they could have done better here.
If you're a soccer fan, you are going to love the amount of teams and players in this game -- it's incredible. If you like Manchester United, there's a team for you. If you like some obscure team from Mexico, they have that too.
If I had to give this game a rating out of five stars, I would give it a three. The gameplay is just too easy, even on expert modes. The presentation is lacking, too. It might be best to try experimenting with the camera angles and see if that helps. The mini games and the "create your own player" mode is fun, but it's really all about the soccer.
