Spotify & Uber Deal: Music Sharing Service Partners With Ridesharing Service
Uber is getting creative. Instead of having to awkwardly ask the driver to put their favorite tunes on, customers using Uber will be able to pre-load the soundtrack for their rides.
Uber is teaming up with Spotify, an on-demand streaming music service, to bring a whole new experience for riders wanting to enjoy their ride from the minute they step in the car to the minute they get out.
The way it works is all via a smartphone. The rider hails the Uber ride and then goes into their Spotify app to select the music they want to hear during the ride. The Uber driver shows up and it's playing the music that was chosen before the ride even started.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick thinks the idea is perfect for his clientele.
"For Uber we're trying to always create a highly-evolved experience, the opposite of course which is the taxi world that came before us," Kalanick said.
Not everyone has Spotify though. It's a free service at first but, to get the really good features, Spotify will charge $9.99 per month.
Spotify seems to agree that having car services is important right now, so they believe that their customers should also be able to control the music that is played in the car.
Each Uber driver can politely decline to participate in the Spotify partnership but Kalanick says that most drivers are having a positive experience with it. If the driver decides not to participate in the program, riders may respond with giving him or her a lower rating.
The driver is also able to control the volume, so if riders get too rowdy or the music is bothering the driver, he or she may turn it down to a more acceptable level.
The initial release of the Spotify/Uber program will come Nov. 21 with 10 big cities in the world (New York, London, Toronto, Sydney) getting the first taste of the program. From there, Uber will attempt to make it standard in as many Uber cars worldwide that they can.
