A Florida man who set his house on fire and shot the first responding officer has made several threats against police before, The Associated Press reported.

The name of the officers and the gunman involved in the exchange have not been released, but other details about Saturday's events have.

The gunman lived at the end of a cul-de-sac and ambushed the responding officer at about 10:15 a.m. The officer died after being shot.

The gunman then tried to steal other weapons from a patrol car but was unsuccessful because they were locked down.

A second responding officer was shot and wounded, and a nearby police officer–who was getting ready to head to work at the Florida State University football game that day–heard the shots. He then shot the gunman and killed him.

The entire exchange has been caught on video from security cameras in the neighborhood.

Police have yet to release other details of the ongoing investigation, as of Sunday morning, but said more information would be released throughout the day.

The fire destroyed the home, but authorities believe no one was killed in the fire.

A Leon County official who spoke anonymously to the AP said that the gunman was known to the department because he had previously made threats against police.

When the responding officer was headed to the blaze, an alert was not activated because it was a neighbor who reported the fire.

"It is almost unimaginable that a call for help turned into the ambush of a Leon County Sheriff's Deputy and the shooting of another deputy by the assailant. Every one of these first responders is a hero and our hearts go out to them and their families," Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum said in a statement, according to AP.

The neighbor who called for help after seeing the fire said she though the gunshots were sounds from the fire and watched as a fire truck approached and then quickly backed up from the scene.

The shooting is the second public incident in the state's capital within a few days.
