Roberto Gómez Bolaños, the beloved Mexican actor and comedian who played "Chespirito," passed away on Friday at the age of 85.

The cause of Bolaños' death was not immediately announced. He was at his home in Cancún, Mexico at the time of his death, reported KTLA via Televisa.

Roberto Gómez Bolaños was famous as a writer, as well, having come up with many characters such as "El Chavo del 8" and "El Chapulín Colorado."

He was born in Mexico City in 1929 and studied engineering at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, but did not graduate with a degree, according to an article in El Economista.

Bolaños instead found his passion for writing screenplays and scripts for television and radio with his work being featured in shows like "Cómicos y Canciones" and "El Estudio De Pedro Vargas."

He came up with the persona of "Chespirito" when director Agustín P. Delgado said he was like a "Little Shakespeare" or "Shakespearito."

In 1968, he signed a contract with Televisión Independiente de México, where he was given a Saturday afternoon time slot.

"El Chavo del 8" has been his most recognized character. wherein the actor played a homeless kid that lived in a barrel in the middle of an apartment complex, having all kinds of hijinks with neighbors like La Chilindrina, Don Ramón, Doña Florinda, Quico, Jaimito El Cartero and La Bruja Del 71.

The show ran for 25 years, but reruns are continuously shown with great ratings, winning him new fans and inspiring a line of toys, an animated series and even a go-cart video game.
