Apple Watch Price, Cost & Release Date: iPhone 5c May Be Discontinued; Watches Could Rely '99 Percent' on iPhones
Tech company Apple may be changing things up this coming year with its iPhone line up. One of the company's smartphones, the iPhone 5c, may be gone from shelves by the end of next year. However, there is also news concerning the upcoming Apple Watch and iPhones.
Apple may be discontinuing production of the colorful iPhone 5c and the older 4S, according to Mac Rumors. A report by the Industrial and Commercial Times from Taiwan reveals that Apple is planning to end production of the smartphone sometime in the middle of 2015. Apple suppliers Wistron and Foxconn will be slowing down production of the 5c. A separate report by KGI Securities says iPhone 5c production will stop by the end of the year.
According to 9 to 5 Mac, the KGI report says demand for newer iPhones like the 6 and 6 Plus has prompted a drop for the 5c and especially the 4S. While demand for the 6 and 6 Plus is projected to rise dramatically during the holiday season, this doesn't hold true for previous models. The 5c and 4s will stagnate or decline.
Following a last promotion campaign, the 5c and 4S will be removed from production. This could be an attempt by Apple to make their lineup cohesive. The 5c and 4S do not support Apple Pay or have TouchID.
Another product using Apple Pay will be the upcoming Apple Watch, which will be released in 2015. The New York Post reports that the wearable device will be much more reliant on iPhones than anticipated.
Though Apple CEO Tim Cook said the Apple Watch will be dependent on the iPhone, he did not explain the extent of the reliance. Developers believe it will almost entirely depend on the smartphone. Technical details have been released to developers to create apps for the device.
"It's virtually 99 percent dependent on having an iPhone to link it up to," Nick Van Wiggeren, software engineer for DigitalOcean, a cloud support service for app developers, told the Post. "If you're more than 20 feet away from your phone, there's a chance you won't get e-mail notifications."
Being closely tethered to the iPhone, however, may mean a longer battery life for the Apple Watch.
