In less than a month “Downton Abbey” will air on American television. In the meantime, both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Screen Actors Guild have nominated the British costume drama for awards in various categories.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “Downton Abbey” was nominated for best drama series. Dame Maggie Smith, who plays the feisty Dowager Countess of Grantham, was also nominated for best female lead in a drama.

The show has been highly popular in the U.S. and continues to be nominated in for various awards.

When the cast was nominated for the SAG awards, three of the cast members did something very unexpected. According to People, Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore) and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) fist-bumped after learning they were nominated. That’s a little more “Jersey Shore” than “Downton Abbey.” Carson would certainly not approve.

The cast, however, had more reasons to celebrate. The Mirror reports the show was also nominated for best TV drama and best supporting actress. The latter nominated Joanne Froggat, who plays Anna Bates.

Her character went through a very traumatic event in Season 4 when she was raped by Mr. Green, Lord Gillingham’s valet. Her performance led to an outpour of letters from fans that were rape victims, thanking her for her performance.

“It made that particular storyline very worthwhile to me,” she told the Mirror. “I told those people that their letters were very much appreciated by me and that if what Anna went through struck a chord with them, if they found her experience helpful, then I was pleased.”

The “Downton Abbey” Twitter account celebrated its nomination and congratulated Froggat.
