Sandy Hook School Shooting: Families of Victims Plan Wrongful Death Lawsuits As Support for Gun Rights Increases
The parents of eight of the children killed in Dec. 14, 2012, at the massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary have informed Connecticut courts they might file wrongful death lawsuits in either state or federal court.
According to Reuters, a spokesman for the law firm Koskoff, Koskoff and Bieder affirmed one of its lawyers had met with some of the Newtown parents about potential suits.
Shannon Watts, a former stay-at-home mom and communications executive who founded Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America after the Sandy Hook slayings, is astounded by the inaction she sees regarding gun laws.
"There is no other developed country that would tolerate this kind of gun violence around school age children," she said.
And as the Los Angeles Times reported, a new Pew Research Center survey found that 52 percent of participants believe in the right to own guns. It is the first time that Pew has found more support for gun rights in more than two decades.
Two years after a 20-year-old gunman named Adam Lanza murdered 20 first graders and six educators before killing himself, the town of Newtown still has no plans for public ceremonies.
A 12-member commission that includes four parents of young victims of the attack, however, is moving toward the creation of a permanent memorial to honor the dead.
Kyle Lyddy, chairman of the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission, or SHPMC, said, "We are meeting monthly, but have taken December off out of respect for the families who lost their loves ones on that tragic day."
The SHPMC has not set a strict deadline for the mission yet as it is still considering many proposals, such as an outdoor park and gardens, indoor murals and art exhibits.
"Our main goal,” Lyddy said, “is to get this right."
According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a group created by joint efforts of Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, there have been 95 incidents of gun-related school violence that have taken place across 33 states since the killings at Sandy Hook.
