Champions League Knockout Phase Draw Results: Real Madrid to Face Schalke, FC Barcelona to Collide With Manchester City
The UEFA Champions League round-of-16 matchups are now set following the draw held on Monday in Switzerland.
Champions League holders Real Madrid, who cruised to the knockout phase with a perfect 6-0 record in Group B, will collide with Schalke in the Last 16, which will be a rematch of their round-of-16 match last year.
Real Madrid defeated Schalke, 9-2 on aggregate, last year en route to winning the prestigious title. While Real Madrid will be a heavy favorite heading into their rematch, Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes believes that the Spanish powerhouse club is beatable.
"We know how we lost badly last year. Real are one of the best teams in the world. But even these teams are beatable," Howedes said via Goal. "We will do our best to challenge the holders."
Schalke finished second to Chelsea in Group G with eight points from two wins, two draws and two defeats.
Meanwhile, FC Barcelona also drew a familiar foe as they will be pitted against reigning Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City in the round-of-16. FC Barcelona took a 2-0 win in the first leg last year at Etihad Stadium, while Chelsea scored a 2-1 in the second leg at Camp Nou.
Manchester City football director Txiki Begiristain said that being drawn against FC Barcelona again is "unbelievable," but he expressed confidence that they will get a different result this season.
"We have plenty of confidence with the way we qualified beating Bayern Munich at home and Roma away, so the players will be working hard to get fit and arrive in confidence for those games," Begiristain said via ESPN. "We have improved our squad from last season and we have some real quality up front."
Atletico Madrid, who lost to Real Madrid in the finals last season, will go up against Bayer Leverkusen, while current Barclays Premier League leader Chelsea will go up against Paris Saint-Germain.
Below is the complete list of round-of-16 matches. First-leg matches will be played on Feb 17, 18, 24 and 25, while second-leg matches are scheduled on Mar. 10, 11, 17 and 18.
