Martina Navratilova and her longtime partner, Julia Lemigova, were married in New York City on Monday, reports the BBC.

Speaking to the news service at the Peninsula hotel in New York following the wedding ceremony, the nine-time Wimbledon winner said her married status felt "really odd."

"I'm 58 years old, I got married for the first time -- it's about time, right?" said Navratilova. "Growing up as a gay woman you just don't ever think about that, and then I thought, about 10 years ago, 'You know, I think within 10 years gay marriage will be legal.' And here we are, 10 years later, making it legal."

Thirty-three years after Navratilova came out as bisexual, she proposed to Lemigova during the U.S. Open last September. It was a moment telecasted on the Jumbotron at New York's Arthur Ashe stadium.

During an interview in the Tennis Channel suite, the tennis legend knelt down on one knee and offered Lemigova a diamond-studded engagement ring.

"Originally it wasn't the idea to do it at the U.S. Open, on the Jumbotron and all that, but then it was, 'Why not? I've seen it in movies!' "Navratilova told People magazine of the Sept. 6 proposal. "And it all came off, everything worked out perfectly!"

"I was so overwhelmed and completely surprised," Lemigova said of the moment, "but I would not expect anything less from Martina."

The marriage makes Navratilova's role as wife and mother official. Lemigova has two children -- daughters -- and Navratilova told the BBC that the youngest had been pestering her to propose all year.

Lemigova, 42, is a Russian former model and businesswoman who was runner-up at the Miss USSR 1990 pageant, but later crowned after the winner was disqualified. She moved to Western Europe and eventually settled in Paris where she founded a cosmetics firm, Russie Blanche, and opened a spa.
