Fans of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" are going to have to wait until next year to find out what will happen to Elena, who was kidnapped by Kai, and Caroline's mom, who is suffering from a terminal illness.

The midseason finale of "The Vampire Diaries" ended with a couple of major cliffhangers. In the episode, which was titled "Christmas Through Your Eyes," Bonnie burned her tree, Matt reluctantly became Enzo's partner, Kai captured Elena after he gained access to magic and Liz Forbes was diagnosed with cancer, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Although Kai has successfully sucked all the magic from the Traveler spell that upheld the anti-magic border around Mystic Falls, he won't have this supernatural power for long.

According to "The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Caroline Dries, Kai's source of magic comes with a "timer."

"He charges up like a battery, and then it runs out like a really cheap, junky battery. It's not a permanent solution for him but the consequences of that will certainly be in effect in Episode 11 when we come back from our break," teased the EP during an interview with E! News.

Towards the end of the midseason finale, Damon opened his front door to find Elena standing underneath his mistletoe. However, just when it seemed like Damon found a way to get a kiss, Elena disappeared. It turns out that Kai put a cloaking spell on her and knocked her out with a pipe. As a result, "Delena" fans are going to have to wait until 2015 to see the couple reignite their romance.

According to Dries, Kai captured Elena in order to seek revenge against Damon and because he is going to need her help.

"He has a chip on his shoulder for Elena and Damon, but especially Damon having been stranded by him in the prison world. So he feels like getting at Damon via Elena is the perfect revenge," said the showrunner. "Having sucked up all that magic from Mystic Falls has repercussions even for him. He needs Elena's help with that."

Fortunately, Dries signaled that there will be hope for "Delena" when the show returns in January.

"I can tease that we will finally see them come face-to-face soon and we'll continue to watch their relationship evolve," she said. "Their separation won't last forever. You just have to have patience."

Dries went on to tease how Caroline will deal with the shocking news that her mother, Sheriff Forbes, has cancer in the next episode.

"We're going to see a human suffer a very human illness for the first time on this show. It's the first time someone hasn't been taken out by something supernatural. It's going to be a challenge. And Caroline is going to try to fix it and save her mom from dying and it's not going to go great."

During a recent interview with E! News, Dries dropped spoilers about what to expect from Bonnie in the New Year.

"If/when Bonnie ever does get out of the prison world ... Jeremy is going to notice some pretty major changes in his girlfriend," she said, adding that she burned her tree was a symbol that she has let go of her past. "Bonnie was trying to see the silver lining in her situation and get out and enjoy a day where she could celebrate, and reminisce and not feel sorry for herself. She tried to take the high road, and she did, but by the end of the day she realized, 'This isn't working. I'm alone here. This sucks. Screw it.' This first chapter of Bonnie being stuck in this prison world is over, and a new bad--s Bonnie is emerging."

Viewers will also discover what will happen to Enzo's prisoner, Matt, in the upcoming episode, which is titled "Woke Up With a Monster." In the last episode, Matt was tasked with helping Enzo destroy all of Stefan's happiness.

Dries told the The Hollywood Reporter that Enzo "needs to employ Matt to get what he wants.

"And he's going to come at Stefan from an unexpected angle, and, ultimately, he and Matt are going to have an interesting relationship, and it's going to reveal a couple extra layers of Stefan we haven't seen before," she continued. "In the one Paul Wesley directed, in Episode 11, we're going to see Enzo make his first move."

Season 6, Episode 11 of "The Vampire Diaries," titled "Woke Up With a Monster," will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
