Sony's PlayStation 5 (PS5) might be coming soon as either a physical device or a cloud-based product. At the moment, however, these are only fanciful rumors and speculations.

In light of the recent email hack of Sony Pictures Studios, Sony's video game arm appears to be focusing on its PlayStation systems. The PlayStation 5, which would be a next step in the video game industry for the conglomerate, would be a win for the company, as well as gamers who are seeking something new.

If the PS5 does come, some speculate that the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Microsoft's Xbox devices might become extinct.

The PS5 speculation raised its head when a Sony executive spoke about it. Speaking to a Japanese newspaper, Nikkei Keizai Shimbum, Sony Computer Entertainment's executive vice president Masayasu Ito stated that gamers should expect a "next generation" of gaming consoles. Ito mentioned the PS5 as the next generation device, but he did not elaborate specifically on if it would be a console or not.

"I think there will be a PS5," Ito said, the International Business Times (IBT) reported. "However, I don't know what form it'll have. It could be a physical console, or it could be in the cloud," Ito said.

Sony has already started to get the ball rolling on its next generation gaming systems. This summer Sony introduced PlayStation Now -- a cloud gaming service -- and the $100 PlayStation TV, IBT reported.

With the launch of PlayStation Now, it may well very be Sony's foot in the cloud-gaming door. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida says that their cloud gaming service is the intention of the company to be more "service oriented," The Inquisitor reported.

Is Sony saying that they are giving the people what they want? With PlayStation Now, which is based on a streaming technology purchased with Gaikai, they are trying something new that their customers can get used to. And maybe they are paving the way for the PS5's speculated cloud-gaming system, The Inquisitor reported. If the PS5 is cloud-based then it would not necessarily need faster hardware.

Yoshida adds that the company is keeping their options open.

When the PS5 does come, if at all, Sony is way ahead in its online gaming. Within the past few months, Sony appears to have been focusing more on their video game platforms, cutting back on its TV and smartphone divisions and delving into their PS projects such as Morpheus, the company's virtual reality headset, IBT reported.
